BIO
Cynthia “Yubi” Mendez is a Dominidoran-American writer from New York City. Her lyrical poetics began at the age of 10 when she rewrote lyrics to her favorite Selena and Celine Dion songs, as unofficial B tracks. These song-poems became fundamental to the development of her voice. A proud rebel, in love with the malleability of language, she hopes her bilingual work disrupts preconceived notions about Latinx identities, and empowers all womxn of color to tell it how it is. Mendez would love to set her poetry collection in development, “How I Learned to Breathe” to the stage next.
