Alexandra Mane (Oshun Damilola) is an Afro-Dominican artist, writer, and nonprofit leader. She is an initiated priest of Oshun in the Lucumi tradition since 2012 and initiated into Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. in 1996. Alexandra believes there is no delineation between her chosen profession and artistic expression. Both are inspired by her belief in legacy and passion for healing ancestral trauma. She is based out of Maryland, USA and La Vega, DR.
Project Description
The photos are part of a series-in-progress entitled Rematriación (Rematriation). The series is a visual, oral, and written record of my re-introduction to the Dominican Republic - homeland of my closest known descendants. The photos and stories were gathered during the COVID pandemic between July 2021 and February 2022. At a time when everything was virtual and intangible, I found myself in person in the Cibao region with the land, memories, and dreams of my ancestors. I share these with an open heart and deep gratitude for my ancestors from the lineage of Mane, Vargas, Diaz, Arias, Fernandez, Ramos, Marmol, Dilone, Estevez, and Rodriguez. May their names never be forgotten. Ibaye baye tonu.
